At the start of her high school career, Yaretzy never imagined she would be where she is today. Once a quiet and reserved student at Omaha South High School, she has blossomed into a confident young woman with aspirations of a career in broadcast journalism. Her transformation began when she ventured into modeling, an experience she credits for shaping her into the person she is today. It was through this newfound confidence that she started exploring her academic interests and future ambitions.
A turning point for Yaretzy was embracing her love for learning. “Since I broke out of my shell and started asking questions, school became easier for me,” says Yaretzy. However, despite her academic growth, college was not always in her plans. Initially, she didn’t think it was an option for her, but over time, her perspective shifted. “I’m going to college for myself and for my mom,” she shares. “My family is so proud of me. Since I joined College Possible, I feel motivated, and I am motivating my siblings too.”
The impact of College Possible and a supportive mentor
Joining College Possible proved to be a game-changer for Yaretzy.
It was the best decision I ever made,” she says. “I’ve learned so much about college, and now I feel confident when it comes to pursuing my dream.”
Her current coach, DJ, has been a pillar of encouragement. “With DJ, she’s not just a mentor, she’s like a best friend,” Yaretzy shares. “It’s scary to grow up and figure out your life, but she motivates me like nobody ever has before. She makes me feel like I can do anything.”
Before College Possible, Yaretzy had considered college but knew little about how to make it happen. Now, she knows with certainty that she will be attending the University of Nebraska Omaha in the fall and plans to major in communications. Inspired by the successful professionals she encountered through modeling and internships, she sees a future in broadcast journalism. She is eager for college and the opportunity to meet new people, explore different opportunities, and expand her educational and career pursuits.
Currently, Yaretzy is active in her high school’s drama scene, participating in a one-act play, drama classes, stagecraft and dance. As a natural performer, she also hopes to stay involved in theater and the arts during her time in college.
Exploring career paths and future aspirations
One of the defining experiences of Yaretzy’s high school career was her participation in the Siembra Nebraska internship program, introduced to her by Liz, her College Possible coach from her junior year. “I met so many new people, and the experience made me stronger by pushing me out of my comfort zone,” Yaretzy says. Through this program, she worked a marketing internship at the Latino Center of the Midlands, creating content and attending job shadowing events to broaden her career options. This experience reinforced her passion for communications and opened her eyes to different career opportunities.
While she remains uncertain about her dream job, Yaretzy is confident that through internships, networking, and new experiences, she will carve out a fulfilling career path. One thing she does know for sure: acting and performing will always be a part of her journey.
“I want to be happy and love what I’m doing,” she says. With the determination and resilience she has already shown, there’s no doubt that Yaretzy will make that dream a reality.
