From setbacks to success: How Judith found hope through College Possible

Judith, a biochemistry major at the College of St. Scholastica, first joined College Possible Minnesota because she was unsure what steps to take to even get to college. College Possible offered step-by-step solutions and action plans to keep Judith on track and motivated. It also helped that Judith’s sister was also participating in College Possible.

Judith has nothing but good things to say about her high school coach. She was a great counselor and mentor. In addition to checking on Judith, her coach also helped with narrowing down her colleges, although the College of St. Scholastica had always been at the top of her list. She also cites the ACT practice sessions as being particularly helpful.

The transition to college was a challenge. Judith went from having eight classes each day to just two, but “It’s more information, more on your own, and away from family and your parents. You’re on your own living life and having to make your own decisions” she says.

The transition to college also came with financial challenges. This past year, Judith found herself in the midst of financial struggles. “I honestly thought my dream of studying medicinal chemistry was slipping away. I even started preparing myself for the possibility of leaving school, telling my roommate she might be in the dorm alone for the rest of the year.”

When Judith’s account was put on hold for unpaid tuition, her advising specialist Molly told her about College Possible Minnesota’s Persistence Funding Program and encouraged her to apply.

The Persistence Funding Program has truly been a life-changing blessing for me. It’s had a huge impact on my college journey and has given me the chance to keep working toward my degree. When I found out that my account had been put on hold because of unpaid tuition, I was overwhelmed.

At what felt like my lowest point, the Persistence Funding Program gave me a second chance. It lifted a heavy burden off my shoulders, letting me register for classes and focus on my education instead of constantly worrying about money. It has reignited my hope and determination. Because of College Possible’s support, I’m still on track to finish my biochemistry degree, and I’m one step closer to my ultimate goal: earning a Ph.D. in medicinal chemistry.

The Persistence Funding Program supported me financially and reminded me how powerful support and generosity can be. I am so incredibly grateful for this opportunity to keep pursuing my dreams, and I’m committed to making the most of every chance I’ve been given.”

One of the many ways College Possible supports students is with the Persistence Funding Program, which provides “microgrants” to students who require additional funding to stay enrolled in or to graduate from college. These financial tools were designed to help students address issues that can arise on a student’s journey to graduation. Can you support students like Judith? Make a gift today.
