Michelle is driven by a purpose that traces back to her very first weeks of life. Born premature, Michelle and her two younger sisters all spent their earliest days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Growing up surrounded by the nurses who cared for her family planted a seed that took root and never stopped growing.
This fall, Michelle takes a big step forward. She will attend the University of Texas at Austin to study Health and Society on a pre-med track. But the journey from a childhood fascination with the human body to UT Austin required a bridge, and College Possible Texas was honored to help build it.
Discovering a Shared Path
Michelle’s passion for healthcare grew quickly in high school. She enrolled in her school’s health science academy, joined Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), and was elected chapter president her senior year, all while leading the National Honor Society and singing in the choir at Stony Point High School.
Yet as a first-generation college student, navigating the world of college admissions felt unfamiliar. Michelle’s parents offered boundless support, but the specifics of the process were new territory for the whole family.
That changed when a College Possible Texas coach visited her classroom her junior year; the coach was an alum of Michelle’s own high school, and she felt an instant connection.
“It really inspired me for someone to show that much care to students with their own experience,” Michelle said.
Turning Ambition Into Action
When Michelle joined College Possible Texas, she gained a coach who helped translate her hard work into a strong college application. Together, they spent hours on her college essay and mapped out the hours she’d devoted to her extracurricular activities.
The coaching extended to Michelle’s home life, too. “What do your parents think about this? How can we involve them?” became a regular question in Michelle’s coaching sessions, and the answers found their way home. That collaborative approach led to a meaningful moment when Michelle’s parents attended her scholarship ceremony, a memory she calls one of the most special of the entire process.
Steady Support Through a Hard Season
The fall of senior year is stressful for anyone, but Michelle was also navigating her grandmother’s terminal illness. Thanks to her College Possible coach, Michelle didn’t have to choose between being present for her family and fighting for her future. Her coach helped her keep track of all the forms and deadlines, so Michelle could be with her family before her grandmother passed away in November of her senior year. Knowing that her application to the University of Texas at Austin had been safely submitted brought a sense of peace during a painful season.
“With that support in my corner, I didn’t have to carry the weight of figuring everything out alone,” Michelle said. “[My coach] taught me how to handle the setbacks and keep moving forward. I was able to get through that tough time a lot easier because my coach had my back.”
The Next Chapter
Today, Michelle is starting her freshman year at UT Austin with deep optimism, eager to dive into pre-med studies, connect with fellow aspiring healthcare professionals, and step into adulthood at her own pace.
She won’t have to navigate these next steps alone. College Possible has supported her since her junior year of high school, and they’ll stay in her corner until the day she graduates. This fall, her college advisor, Anakaren, will guide her through everything from financial aid to campus life as a first-generation student.
Anakaren is already thrilled to work with her: “Michelle is a proactive and determined student. She is quick to bring up questions and solve problems right away. I look forward to continuing to support her throughout her college journey and am excited to see what all she will accomplish at UT Austin.”
When asked to describe her future in a word, Michelle didn’t hesitate: “Exciting.”
