Real Journeys, Real Impact: How Lived Experience Strengthens Student Success

At College Possible Texas, people power our results. AmeriCorps members and full-time staff bring real college experience, practical problem-solving skills, and steady encouragement that move students closer to a degree.

Our impact runs full circle. Many students we once served return to our team and guide the next generation of students. Today, nearly a third of our staff are College Possible alumni. Their work with students demonstrates what persistence looks like. Some begin as AmeriCorps coaches, then step into full-time roles on our program teams. Others join our growing team of full-time advisors. Through either path, each transforms alumni success into student support, accelerates problem-solving, and sustains what works year after year.

Additionally, even for those who aren’t alumni, most of our team were also the first in their families to go to college. They remember the forms, the deadlines, and the doubt. That memory sharpens our work. Guided by the College Possible curriculum, our team understands the “why” behind each challenge, coaches with empathy through tough decisions, and celebrates progress. Students meet role models who share their ambitions and questions, which helps build confidence and foster follow-through.

Personal experience matters, and training turns it into consistent practice. Our clear curricula, combined with industry-leading data tools, alumni insights, and first-generation perspectives, work together to provide students timely support from coaches and advisors who keep them on track toward their dreams.

Alumni staff keep our culture student-first, and first-gen professionals bring strategies that work in real life. AmeriCorps members extend our reach across partner schools and campuses. The result is strong engagement, high persistence, and fast problem-solving for students in our programs.

When a student meets a coach who has lived the journey, the message is simple: you belong in college, you can finish, and we will walk with you toward a degree. That is how we expand opportunity for all, one relationship at a time.
