How Cecilia Turned Her College Dreams into a Degree

For Cecilia, college is about creating opportunities that could change the future of her life and community.

Growing up on the south side of Milwaukee, Cecilia knew the challenges students like her often face. As a first-generation college student, the path to higher education felt uncertain, and at times, overwhelming.

“I always wanted to go to college, and so when College Possible said, ‘we can help you,’ I was like, I definitely need it,” Cecilia said. “Because being a first-generation student, even though I had siblings that went to college, it’s different for every person, so I definitely wanted that support.”

That support became a turning point.

Through College Possible Wisconsin, Cecilia says she found more than college prep. She found mentorship, guidance, and someone in her corner who believed in her potential. Her coach helped her navigate admissions, financial aid, scholarships, and the transition into college itself.

“The mentorship I’ve experienced through College Possible is the biggest thing that has helped my journey,” she shares. “Having someone there helps me keep track of what I need to do and what I want. Talking with my coach helps me plan out my goals.”

Now, Cecilia is preparing to graduate from Marquette University with a degree in public relations and is currently interning at Baird, an achievement that reflects years of hard work, persistence, and personal growth.

Her transition to college was not without challenges. Coming from a small high school community, stepping onto a large university campus brought feelings of uncertainty and imposter syndrome.

“When I first got to college, I dealt with imposter syndrome,” Cecilia says. “I was like, ‘I don’t know why I’m here. I don’t understand what I’m doing.’ But I’ve been accepting that this is where I am meant to be.”

She credits College Possible for helping her push through those moments of doubt.

“I loved how welcoming everyone was. College Possible always said, ‘we’re here for you,’ and they actually meant it,” she says. “Just being heard made me feel less alone.”

Over time, Cecilia began to see herself differently: not just as a student working hard to succeed, but as someone fully capable of thriving.

“College Possible taught me how to expand my horizons,” she says. “They taught me to be more proud and confident in my work. To be proud of myself and know that I am here for a reason.”

For Cecilia, earning a college degree means everything.

“I don’t think I’d have the opportunities I want in life if it weren’t for a college degree,” she says. “Education can really change everything for you.”

As she prepares to take the stage as the keynote student speaker at this year’s Dream Big Dinner, Cecilia’s story is a reminder of what is possible when students have the support they need to reach college, persist through challenges, graduate with confidence, and build their futures.
