Fifteen years ago, a vision took root in Omaha: Every student should have the opportunity to pursue higher education and access the support they need to succeed.
Today, that vision lives in the stories of thousands of students whose lives have been shaped by the opportunity to attend college, persist through challenges, earn a degree, and imagine a future that once may have seemed out of reach.
For a college access and success nonprofit, celebrating 15 years is about much more than marking a milestone. It is about celebrating the students who have walked through our doors, the families who have encouraged them, the volunteers and partners who have stood beside them, and the community that has invested in their potential.
Most of all, it is about recognizing what becomes possible when a community believes that where a student starts should never determine where they finish.
College access is often described in terms of applications, admissions, financial aid, and enrollment. Those milestones matter. But access is only the beginning.
Success requires more than getting through the admissions door. It requires a network of people who can help students navigate what comes next.
For 15 years, College Possible Omaha has worked to provide that support.
We have seen that a student’s path to a degree is rarely a straight line. There are moments of excitement and moments of uncertainty. There are semesters when everything seems to fall into place and others when a financial challenge, academic setback, or unexpected circumstance threatens to derail a student’s plans.
In those moments, support matters.
Support is a college adviser helping a student understand their options. Support is a volunteer sharing encouragement or helping a student see possibilities they had not considered. Support is a scholarship that fills a financial gap and makes it possible for a student to enroll for another semester. Support is simply knowing that someone is there to say, “Keep going. You can do this.”
Over 15 years, these moments have added up to something extraordinary.
They have helped students enter college with greater confidence and navigate the challenges that come with pursuing a degree. They have helped students persist when circumstances could have forced them to stop. And they have helped students reach the milestone that represents the culmination of years of effort: graduation.
But the impact of this work does not end when a student receives a diploma.
When a student earns a college degree, the benefits extend beyond that individual. Families see new possibilities. Younger siblings have someone to look up to. Employers gain talented, prepared graduates. Communities benefit from residents with new skills, knowledge, and opportunities to contribute.
A college degree can change the trajectory of a family.
One graduate’s success can change what an entire family believes is possible.
That is why this 15-year anniversary belongs not only to College Possible Omaha, but to the community that has made this work a success.
It belongs to the funders who have invested in students and trusted in their potential. It belongs to the volunteers who have given their time, encouragement, expertise and energy. It belongs to school and community partners who have helped connect students with resources and opportunities. And it belongs to every person who has recognized that creating a stronger community begins with creating opportunities for its young people.
Fifteen years also gives us an opportunity to look forward.
The challenges students face are evolving. Students and families must navigate increasingly complex decisions about financial aid, debt and the value of a degree. Students need support to get to college, complete their education and prepare for meaningful careers.
Our work must also evolve.
The next 15 years will require continued collaboration, innovation and investment. It will require communities willing to ask not only, “How do we help more students get into college?,” but also, “What do students need to thrive once they get there?”
Those questions are at the heart of college access and success.
And they are the heart of our future.
Together, we will continue to ask those questions, adapt to the changing landscape, and build a community where every student has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
Here is to 15 years of possibility—and to the students who will carry that possibility forward for generations to come.
