At College Possible Omaha’s end-of-year celebration last month, college access coach Nyagoa (Ny) was recognized as the AmeriCorps Member of the Year—an award given to the coach who exemplifies College Possible’s core values and serves as a model of AmeriCorps service, as chosen by their fellow coaches.
For Nyagoa, the recognition was especially meaningful. Before she served as a coach, she was a College Possible student herself—proof of the full-circle impact of the program’s mission. Her lived experience, combined with her relentless commitment to student success, made her an especially powerful mentor and advocate.
In addition to her work with students, Nyagoa was elected by her peers to serve as a coach representative this program year—a leadership role within the AmeriCorps cohort. In that capacity, she and the other elected representatives regularly gathered feedback from fellow coaches through surveys and brought their questions, ideas, and concerns to site leadership. She helped elevate coach voices, contributing to a more responsive and collaborative service environment.
Throughout her service term, Nyagoa made a lasting impression on both students and coaches. Known for her magnetic energy, tireless advocacy, and ability to uplift everyone around her, she quickly became a cornerstone of the coaching team—both a leader and a source of joy.

Her selection as AmeriCorps Member of the Year was supported by heartfelt nominations from coaches, who spoke to the depth of her impact, presence, and the example she set for others. Their words, shared anonymously, offer a powerful glimpse into the legacy she left behind:
“Working with Ny this past year has been such a privilege. Achieving such heights of amiability and curiosity is extremely difficult, yet Ny makes it look easy. Her ability to connect with students and her wealth of experiences with organizations in Lincoln and Omaha give her an authority over this kind of work that is easy to respect. She is simply an incredible person. When I grow up, I want to be like Ny.”
“It is with great enthusiasm that I recommend Nyagoa for the AmeriCorps Member of the Year award. Nyago is not just an exceptional service member, she is a force of nature, a mentor, a role model, and a catalyst for change in the lives of every student she serves.”
“What sets Nyagoa apart is the depth of her commitment. She is fully present with students, day in and day out, meeting them where they are, listening intently to their questions and concerns, and ensuring they feel seen and supported. Her dedication does not end when the school bell rings. On her own time, she makes thoughtful, personalized recommendations to help students connect with professionals and mentors whose journeys align with their dreams.”
“Nyagoa doesn’t just teach skills, she builds futures. She equips students with powerful tools that extend far beyond academics: how to prepare for interviews, resolve conflicts with grace, advocate for themselves, and ask for help when it matters most. These aren’t just lessons; they’re life-changing mindsets that will guide students for years to come. Her presence is magnetic. Students are drawn to her warmth, wisdom, and the joy she brings into every interaction. Through her humor, motivation, and authenticity, Nyago creates a safe space where students feel empowered to grow—not just as learners, but as leaders. Because of her, they walk taller. They persevere longer. They believe in themselves more deeply.”
“Nyagoa embodies the highest ideals of AmeriCorps. Her work is transformative, her heart is immense, and her impact is undeniable. To honor her with this award is not only fitting—it is necessary. She represents the very best of what this program can be.”
“Ny uplifts others through both action and attitude. Through her high energy, outgoing personality, and unwavering dedication, she naturally connects with us coaches and students, creating a positive and collaborative environment.”
“I feel like Ny should be AmeriCorps Member of the Year because I have never not seen her encapsulate all the core values we have as an organization. Always ready to provide resources and ask questions when she is unsure, an advocate for her students but most of all her peers, and I just genuinely have never seen her without a smile on her face.”
“Ny is one of the most welcoming people I have ever met. She cares so deeply about everyone she interacts with. Her smile can brighten every room. Ny truly embodies not only College Possible’s values but also AmeriCorps’.”
Thank you Ny for being such an outstanding coach and furthering the mission of College Possible. Your service is truly appreciated!
