Scott Del Rossi, vice president of college and career success, first joined College Possible in 2009 through AmeriCorps with College Forward (now College Possible Texas). What began as a year of service to give back to his community soon turned into a calling. After completing two years of service, he joined the staff in 2011—and he’s been here ever since.
As the first in his family to graduate from college, Del Rossi knew firsthand how much mentors, professors, and loved ones had helped him succeed. That experience fueled his desire to pay it forward. “At first, I thought this would just be a year of service,” he reflects. “But 15 years later, I’m still here because I believe in our mission, and I’ve seen the life-changing impact it can have.”
Del Rossi has had the rare privilege of walking alongside students for more than a decade—meeting them as high school juniors eager to apply to the program, celebrating college admissions as a senior, and even reconnecting years later when they are thriving adults with families, homes, and careers. “These life moments remind me why I do this work,” he says. “And because of the people—the College Possible community has been truly special to me.”
One student’s story has stayed with him ever since his AmeriCorps coaching days. She stopped out of college in her freshman year after having a baby and, despite several attempts, never graduated. He admits it was devastating to watch her struggle, but her outlook gave him hope. “She told me, ‘I may not finish college—but my son absolutely will.’ Even though the system failed her, she still believed in the value of higher education.”
For Del Rossi, that’s the heart of College Possible: the ripple effects. Not every student has the traditional success story, but every conversation, every encouragement, and every act of belief matters. “With persistence, opportunity, and support, I believe any student can achieve their goals,” he says.
His advice to students reflects that same perspective: “Know why a college degree matters to you—because that ‘why’ will carry you through the tough times. And don’t be afraid to ask for help. Chances are, others are facing the same challenges, and more often than not, people are ready to support you.”
