Gretchen Twohig
Title and Company: Chief Compliance Officer and General Counsel, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska
College: I have my bachelor’s of science in political science from Texas Christian University in Forth Worth, Texas; I later attended law school at the University of Nebraska College of Law in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Community Involvement: In addition to CP, I currently serve on the Board of Directors for the Women’s Center for Advancement (WCA). I’ve previously served on the Board of Directors for the Women’s Fund of Omaha and chaired Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska’s United Way campaign.
Hobbies: Being active and exercise. Watching my boys play sports. Cooking.
What attracted you to College Possible?
“College Possible is passionate about the students it serves. The organization is committed to helping students succeed in high school, college and eventually the workforce.
College Possible’ s AmeriCorps volunteers, employees and leaders have continued to provide support and services to students throughout the pandemic by staying committed to the organization’s mission and being flexible and dynamic.”
Who helped you on your path to a college degree?
“Both my mom and my grandmother were teachers; education was a priority in our house growing up. My mom and one of my high school English teachers helped me apply for scholarships, grants and loans; encouraged and supported my participation in extra-curricular activities; and they proofread college applications and coached me on admissions essays.
In college, I had two influential professors who encouraged me to pursue higher education.
What have you learned since joining the board?
“We are very fortunate in Omaha to have a supportive and generous community that values education and investment in the future work force.”
Why do you serve with College Possible?
“I believe in education and I believe every student should have the opportunity to go to college. A college education exposed me to careers and opportunities, allowed me to meet new people, and helped me learn and grow in many ways. It was fun.
I was fortunate to have a support system in both high school and college that helped me get there and helped me succeed once I was there. College Possible is this support system for many students and I am honored to help.”
