Student Spotlight: Jason & Yuni

Jason and Yuni are both students in the Federal Way School District navigating schooling in the COVID-era with College Possible by their sides.

Jason, a senior at Todd Beamer High School, is an aspiring anesthesiologist. He initially heard about College Possible from his college and career counselor and had a lot of free time to enroll in the cohort at Todd Beamer. Even when school entered a virtual/hybrid model, Jason still had time to escape from schoolwork and have fun with his cohort. College Possible has helped with his essay writing, which has come in handy outside academic life with his growing interest in fantasy works. He enjoys reading fantasy and was able to incorporate his influences from fantasy novels into his writing.

College Possible has helped me become more articulate in my writing. I learned how to reconstruct my essays into beautiful stories to capture the reader’s interest and support.”

He recently earned admission to Washington State University; the Honors College at University of Washington, Seattle; Pacific Lutheran University; Whitman College; and Seattle University and hopes to enroll this fall at the University of Washington. Although Jason’s not sure what college courses will be like, he is looking forward to establishing relationships with his peers in the dorms and developing future connections!

YuniYuni, a junior at Decatur High School, aspires to become a nurse. After hearing about College Possible from the Career Specialist, Mrs. Novak, she decided to join! Yuni will be the second in her family to apply to college, following the steps of her older sister who graduated from Highline College.

“I want to go to college because I want to prove to myself that I can succeed in my goals of helping others, while growing as a person, and to become an example for those who believe they don’t belong,” Yuri shared.

When Yuni joined College Possible, she quickly learned how to come prepared with notes and how to open up with other students, which are some essentials in the college experience.

When asked about her senior year, she was excited to share the colleges that she hopes to attend: Pacific Lutheran University, Arizona State University or the University of Portland.

What was Yuni’s advice for applying to college? To join College Possible! “It helps build community! Helps with preparing you for college, and with opportunity!”.

Thanks to our partner, BECU, for their generous support that helps make College Possible programming in the Federal Way School District possible.
