First generation students, twins Joseph and Joshua Garcia, made local headlines this summer for graduating at the top of their class as valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively. An academic journey defined by persistence and hard work, together, Joshua and Joseph earned over 30 college acceptances and amassed over $5 million in scholarships and financial aid.

“It was important for me to go to college because I wanted to prove to myself, my family, and the world, that our parents’ dreams are the foundation of our own journey,” said Joshua.

Growing up, Joshua often felt the pressure of striving for perfection in academics and sports. He admitted that this pursuit of perfection made the college decision process challenging. “I realized that you don’t have to be perfect; giving your all is what truly matters,” he said.

Joshua found support by joining the College Possible program his junior year at Milwaukee’s St. Anthony High School. “I joined College Possible because I needed guidance during an overwhelming time,” said Joshua. “It showed me that there are always solutions and steps to follow to reach my goals.”

Joshua is especially grateful for his experience with his College Possible coaches, highlighting the importance of having a strong support system. “College Possible has been invaluable in helping me take weight off my shoulders because you have a coach who has faced similar challenges as you have–and that makes a big difference in achieving success.”

Joshua and his brother are now attending Lawrence University in Appleton, where Joshua plans to major in computer science. With plans to pursue a master’s degree in cybersecurity after graduation and a goal of ultimately joining the FBI, Joshua is excited to make a positive impact in his community. “I want to help find missing people and combat human trafficking,” he says.
