When Daniel moved to the United States from El Salvador in 2021, he had a clear vision for his future: to secure a college education despite the challenges of language, finances, and adapting to a new cultural landscape. Now, as he prepares for his first semester at the University of Nebraska Omaha, Daniel is committed to turning those dreams into a reality, thanks in part to the guidance of his College Possible coaches.
Redefining his path
Initially, Daniel planned to join the National Guard upon graduation, drawn by the promise of one hundred percent tuition assistance. “The idea of serving while earning financial support for college seemed like a strong way forward,” he says. However, personal health struggles have led him to step back from his military aspirations and focus directly on higher education. Financial concerns still weigh heavily on him, but his desire for a college education, shared by his family, keeps him motivated.
Daniel has always been drawn to the world of politics. “I’m fascinated by diplomacy and international relations,” he notes. His lifelong awareness of political issues affecting various countries has shaped his vision for the future, which might include careers in national security, drug policy, or working within an embassy. Despite his clear goals, he remains open to different opportunities, acknowledging that plans can change. “Political science degrees have a lot of different outcomes, and I’m willing to take whatever opportunities are available,” Daniel says.
The value of a college degree
Reflecting on the importance of a college degree, Daniel emphasizes its value in today’s job market. “It opens up so many doors,” he says. “A degree isn’t just about education—it’s about networking and gaining access to resources that can make a difference in your career.”
Daniel first learned about College Possible during his sophomore year at Omaha South High School. As a first-generation college applicant, he recognizes that his parents were unfamiliar with the U.S. college application process, making the program’s guidance invaluable. “I was intimidated by the idea of college,” he admits. “But College Possible provided that extra support I knew I’d need.”
Transformative support from College Possible
His experience with College Possible has proven transformative. Throughout high school, he received valuable information and mentorship from his coaches, Maria and Liz, who often met with him during lunch and created a comfortable environment for discussing his future. Now that Daniel is preparing to enter college, his current coach, Katie, continues to serve as a crucial source of support. “She’s helped me with every aspect of the enrollment process,” he says.
Beyond helping to navigate the college admissions process, Katie reminds Daniel of important deadlines for financial aid applications, and connects him with resources at UNO. “When I thought I was joining the military, I didn’t apply for many scholarships,” he notes. “But now, with Katie’s help, I’m working on filling out the FAFSA and exploring scholarship options.”
Before joining College Possible, Daniel anticipated struggles with the college application process and felt uncertain about his ability to navigate it without much parental support. However, the consistent assistance he received from his coaches has alleviated those fears as he moves into his college experience. “It’s nice to know that support would continue throughout college,” he says.
Looking ahead
Daniel envisions graduating from his undergraduate program within the next five years, satisfied with the opportunities he has seized and the college experience he has gained. “I want to continue looking for military aid in one way or another,” he adds, blending his original aspirations with his newfound ambitions.
Daniel expresses heartfelt gratitude for the support he has received through College Possible. “The coaches have definitely helped me a lot, guiding me on what to do next,” he reflects, acknowledging the program’s profound impact on his educational journey thus far. As he navigates the complexities of college life, Daniel remains hopeful and determined to achieve his dreams in the field of political science.
