Celebrating College Signing Day 2021

College Possible is proud to support Reach Higher and their College Signing Day events. Learn more about the history and ways to celebrate your own event in this guest post from the Reach Higher team!

Education after high school is a critical part of a successful future. Yet, too many young people today are choosing not to pursue higher education (especially now, as many are forgoing college during the COVID-19 pandemic). That’s why former First Lady Michelle Obama started Reach Higher and Better Make Room: to inspire students to own their future.

To make that a reality, we launched College Signing Day in 2014 to celebrate graduating high school seniors who have decided to pursue an education past high school. Whether a student plans to attend a community college, university, a certification program, enlist in the military, or any other education past high school, College Signing Day supports all students who are making a commitment to education.  There have been over 5,000 College Signing Days across the nation celebrating millions of students since we’ve started, and we can’t wait to see how many are thrown this year.

We celebrate College Signing Day on May 1. While college admission deadlines might change, our celebration of students remains the same even during the pandemic (and even when our 2020 College Signing Day celebration unexpectedly went virtual).

This year will follow suit, and our national College Signing Day event will be fully virtual. As always, we want you to celebrate College Signing Day in your communities too! We will be celebrating this year on April 30 and on May 1, but you should celebrate on a date that works best for your community and your students. No matter when your students decide, share those commitments with us using #CollegeSigningDay on social media.

We recently released our brand-new College Signing Day Toolkit to help educators and communities to host their own College Signing Day event. We know that some schools are operating in-person, so we made sure to include ways to celebrate at school as well. Not only that, but we are coming out with social media resources, in-person accessories, and more very soon on our website. Be sure to follow us on social media (@BetterMakeRoom on TikTok, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook) and check out our #CollegeSigningDay hashtag for updates.

For students, deciding where to go to college represents the culmination of an entire formal education and a huge step into adulthood. Sign up to host a College Signing Day event at your school or community at BetterMakeRoom.org/CollegeSigningDay so we can help you make it the best event yet! After an unimaginable year, let this celebration be one of joy and hope for all of your students. We are excited to celebrate together, and we can’t wait to see all the ways that you do.
