In the movie You’ve Got Mail, Nora Ephron wrote, “Don’t you love New York in the fall? It makes me wanna buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address.” We’re not in New York, but we are excited for the start of a new school year.
What students will be working on
AmeriCorps coaches have successfully completed their Welcome Weeks training and they’re entering schools, ready to start supporting students as they begin the process of preparing to apply to college. For coaches supporting high school juniors, this means:
- Helping them activate and update their Overgrad college application tracking software profile
- Meeting the rest of their College Possible cohort
- Letting students know what to expect from College Possible
For coaches working with high school seniors, support includes
- Helping them narrow down their list of six colleges to apply for
- Identifying two or three people to write recommendation letters
- Drafting their personal essay for college applications
What coaches are excited about
We asked our coaches what they were most excited about in the coming year and this is what they said:
- Campus visits. -Klimisha
- Helping students research majors/programs that interest them. -Rebecca
- To see the visions and journeys these students are on and trying to pursue for college. – Qiana
- Guiding students as they figure out their path after high school and growing alongside them. -Sumeya
- Supporting students as they work toward their goals. Being a positive force in the often-stressful process of preparing for college. -Jayne
