College Possible students explore career opportunities with community partners

Thanks to generous support from the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation, College Possible Minnesota students from six metro area high school had the opportunity to participate in behind-the-scenes career exploration field trips at some of the major corporations in the Twin Cities.

On April 12, Patrick Henry High School and St. Louis Park High School students attended a panel with four Cargill employees. Additionally, they took a tour of the campus and participated in small group discussions with Cargill employees about their jobs, potential career paths, and the company.

“I loved hearing the employees talk about their life stories and how they got here,” said Sulin, a Patrick Henry High School student. “I am glad I went on this tour and had the opportunity to hear the employees talk about their experiences in college. It eased my anxiety about my own future.”

Students from Champlin Park High School, Park Center High School, and Ubah Medical Academy visited Boston Scientific on April 20. Students toured the manufacturing department, participated in hands-on learning activities with the robotics development and anatomical model labs, and attended a career panel with early-career Boston Scientific employees.

Anthony, a Junior at Camlin Park High School said, “It was really fun! I liked touring the different areas and labs and learning about all the information that was shared. I learned that the opportunities offered at Boston Scientific are kind of limitless.”

Students from Columbia Heights High School visited Xcel Energy on April 26. They participated in an activity focused on human-centered design in the XCELab, learned about what Xcel Energy does and the various career opportunities offered at the company. They finished the day by attending a panel and Q&A with Xcel employees from a variety of departments.

“It was a great trip!!” said Narriah, a junior at Columbia Heights High School. “My favorite part of the trip was talking with the panelists and getting to know the different job opportunities Xcel Energy has. I really liked meeting everyone, talking to everyone and getting to know more about the Xcel Energy!”
