There was never any question that Miriam was going to make her dream of going to college a reality. While there were certainly challenges along the way, Miriam felt confident she would reach her goals as she worked through the College Possible curriculum during her junior and senior years at Westside High School.
College Possible was a great support system for me. It was a community where I made some really great friendships that remained strong even after I graduated.”
In addition to guiding her through ACT prep courses, college selection and scholarship applications, Miriam’s College Possible coach encouraged her to look into study abroad programs. Miriam and her coach remain good friends to this day, “I went to her for everything I needed, not just academics. She made it clear she was there for me for anything.”
A first-generation senior at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, Miriam is pre-law and majoring in sociology and political science, with hopes of attending law school at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Remembering her coaches’ advice to explore study abroad programs, Miriam plans to attend the UNO program for law in London next fall. While she prepares for her time abroad, she is making sure she is ahead in her classes at UNO and is studying for the LSAT. “It’s important to be educated and I’ve learned so much in college.”
A Buffett Scholarship recipient, Miriam is currently interning at Kasaby and Scohmoke, an experience that has sparked a passion for human rights and immigration law. Her college experience has been life changing for Miriam, it has expanded her knowledge base beyond her expectations. “I’ve learned so much about our world and social justice, and it has allowed me an opportunity to express my feelings and ideas,” she said.
