From April 19 to 23, the Washington team participated in a weeklong sustainability challenge in celebration of Earth Week. Led by our Community Partnerships Team members, Sophia DiCarlo and Kelly Buck, the project challenged members, both individually and as small teams, to incorporate more sustainable practices into their day-to-day lives.
The challenge? All staff and AmeriCorps members were required to take one photo or video of their activities during Earth Week and share it with the site. Each post would collect points for their assigned team. The team with the most points at the end of the week earned a chance to win prizes!
Some of the activities were:
- Using reusable materials
- Contributing to a recycling pile/bin
- Decreasing paper use
- Taking 30 minute litter walks in their local area
- Buying local food
- Going vegetarian or vegan/plant based for the week
Throughout the week, many team members shared photos of their participation. The team that won the most points was Team Tofu Bulgogi!
At the end of the week, teams were also invited to attend an in-person tour and learn about sustainable farming. Thank you, Rainier Beach Urban Farm & Wetlands for inviting us and helping us wrap up Earth Week!
Although this weeklong challenge focused on the intersection of education and environmental justice, the goal was to encourage everyone to implement these activities into their daily lives and communities.
