First of all, I am thrilled to be serving as the new Executive Director of College Possible Milwaukee!
By way of introduction, I thought it best to briefly share my journey and how it led to my current role with College Possible.
My journey began with V.E. Carter Child Development Center (CCDC), a community-based organization located on the corners of 20th and Vliet Streets. It was there that Mrs. Lorraine P. Carter, Dr. Mirtlean Jenkins and Dr. Gloria Gilmer served as my very first professional coaches. Mrs. Carter was the Executive Director of CCDC and Drs. Jenkins and Gilmer headed up two grant-funded programs housed within the CCDC building. These strong, well-educated, community-minded, ultra-professional, classy black women left an indelible mark on me personally and professionally. .
When I left the loving and firm guidance of these amazing women at CCDC years later, I served in various leadership positions, each with increasing levels of responsibility. Some of those positions included: business accounts manager with AT&T, director of admissions for Eastbrook Academy, executive assistant to the superintendent of Whitefish Bay Schools and most recently, director for the department of Strategic Partnerships and Customer Service with Milwaukee Public Schools.
The nine years spent with MPS working with volunteers, students, alumni and families helped me to develop the heart and passion that I have for the scholars we serve and the mission we strive to carry out each day. I believe that my heart and passion can also be tied to the teachings of my phenomenal mother, as well as Mrs. Carter, Dr. Jenkins, Dr. Gilmer and every professional and personal experience along the way.
I look forward to offering the same or similar support, encouragement and guidance that was offered to me professionally over 30 years ago to our scholars, coaches and staff.
In the words of Frederick Douglass, it is “easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.” Our work at College Possible strives to do just that – support the building up of our scholars so that they not only gain admission, but continue on to college graduation.
Thank you for the many ways that you have supported College Possible to date. I look forward to meeting and working with you!
