On Nov. 20, Neumann University welcomed over 140 College Possible Philadelphia students from six high schools to campus for “Neumann Day,” a specialized campus visit that gave students in-depth access to life as a Neumann University student. “Neumann Day” was developed through College Possible’s Bridge partnership with Neumann University as a way to ensure targeted, direct support in the recruitment and enrollment of College Possible students. Elaborating on the shared goal of supporting students, Executive Director Jen Weikert said:
“In Neumann University, College Possible Philadelphia has found a committed and thoughtful partner that shares our vision for coaching students to and through college. We continue to learn from President Domes and senior administrators about effective strategies and supports for students — especially those from low-income backgrounds and first-generation college goers.”
Christine Gibble, Neumann’s senior admissions counselor, kicked off the day with an admissions panel covering topics such as the college application process, specialized academic programs, financial aid & scholarships, athletics, study abroad opportunities, and various campus clubs and organizations. Following the panel discussion, College Possible students and their coaches toured Neumann’s campus and facilities, culminating with a lunch in the dining halls provided by Neumann.
“I was amazed to witness our students engaging in the tours and presentations that were given while still having plenty of fun and a good time,” said Jake Kwon, a community partnership team member who was instrumental in organizing the event logistics.
The day concluded with a Q&A with current Neumann students, as well as remarks by Mike Mullen, dean of academic support, and Dr. Chris Everett Domes, Neumann University president.
“My experience with College Possible is that it is a wonderful connector,” commented Dr. Domes in a 2018 interview regarding the establishment of the partnership, “Having a partner that offers some additional support — mentoring and coaching students, particularly students who are in a more socially and economically challenging position or students who academically have the ability but just need the additional support, is great.”
