Returning coaches share their insight
Sophia, who dedicated herself to guiding college students at the University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO) throughout the 2022-2023 academic year, is back as a college success coach at UNO.
Why did you choose to serve a second year?
I chose to serve a second year because I wanted to strengthen my leadership skills and take advantage of the opportunities for professional growth.
As a returning coach, what aspect are you most eagerly anticipating?
I am most looking forward to meeting a new cohort of students!
What advice do you have for new coaches?
My advice would be to take time for yourself—compassion fatigue is very real, and you can’t pour from an empty cup. Take a walk, a ten-minute breather, mental health days, whatever you need to help with recharging and recentering.
Dorothy, who made a lasting impact on high school students at Northwest High School during the past academic year, has returned to Northwest this fall.
Why did you choose to serve a second year?
After growing my knowledge and skills through a first year of service, returning felt like the right next step.
As a returning coach, what aspect are you most eagerly anticipating?
I’m looking forward to witnessing students’ journeys unfold and supporting them through the college application process.
What advice do you have for new coaches?
Since much of the higher education landscape is characterized by change, my best advice would be to approach change with an adaptable and welcoming spirit.
Yuli, who expertly served as a tech-connected coach, reaching students nationwide in the previous year, is once again stepping into her role as a tech-connected coach.
Why did you choose to serve a second year?
I received so much support during my first term of service and it felt right to come back a second year!
As a returning coach, what aspect are you most eagerly anticipating?
I look forward to gaining more experience in leadership positions. Also reaching out to students again and catching up on how summer went!
What advice do you have for new coaches?
Take advantage of resources that can help you find your next step.

Take it easy, never take on more than you could. Have “me” time.
